Spend two mornings exploring the fundamentals of Drypoint and carborundum.
Drypoint – A great introduction to the world of intaglio Printmaking. Drypoint is the most direct of all the intaglio processes. Using a range of sharp tools, you create an image by scratching directly into a soft metal plate. The resulting line is softer than an etched line and has a slight fuzziness; tone can also be achieved by crosshatching and using specialist tools. Experimentation with this versatile technique can result in soft subtle lines, deep dark velvety lines (burrs) or energetic lines, making drypoint a highly expressive medium.
Carborundum – Also known as silicon carbide. Carborundum is a grit that is primarily used for its abrasive properties. In Printmaking it is mixed with glue and painted on to collagraph and drypoint plates; when printing, these area hold lots of ink creating deep rich and velvety tonality. The grit comes in coarse, medium and fine grades each holds a differing amount of ink and creating a differing tone allowing for a wide range of effects to be accomplished.
