Time Amongst Pictures, Bruno’s Dream and Other Stories brings together new etchings & other works by Oliver Hoffmeister and Kevin Petrie, united by a shared interest in attention, memory, and the transformation of source material through printmaking.
Hoffmeister’s work develops from intense observation during his 2024 residency at the Museo del Prado. Using drypoint in its most direct and pared-back form, he reinterprets paintings from the collection, allowing images to shift through recollection and imagination. The resulting prints sit between homage and reinvention, retaining echoes of their origins while becoming distinctly personal responses to time, place, and looking.
Petrie’s work emerges from a renewed engagement with etching at Northern Print, informed by his long-standing interest in the writing and philosophy of Iris Murdoch. His prints draw on scenes, themes, and states of mind from Murdoch’s novels—particularly Bruno’s Dream—to form a loose, dreamlike narrative exploring ageing, attention, connection, and the human relationship with nature. Alongside these are collagraphs and lithography that reflect ideas of presence, ecology, and our place within a shared web of life.
