Northumbria, 2017: Ouseburn Railway Viaduct, Newcastle upon Tyne [railways, engineering, environment, regeneration] Screenprint 46.6 x 69.7 57 x 76.3 4/6 £200 This print is in three layers on Somerset Satin White paper, and is one of a set of prints depicting 21st century Northumbria, inspired by hand-coloured photographs in the 1898 book Japan.
Ouseburn Viaduct, built 1837-39, was one of the earliest to have laminated wood arches, supported on sandstone pillars. The wood was replaced in 1869 with iron. The valley it crosses was polluted by over 300 years of industry. The long process of regenerating the green spaces began in the late 20th century.
