This print is in two layers on Somerset Satin White paper, and is one of a set of prints depicting 21st century Northumbria, inspired by hand-coloured photographs in the 1898 book Japan.
The Monument celebrates Earl Grey pushing through the Great Reform Act of 1832 which started a century of electoral reform. The words forming the background are the first four paragraphs of the act. The artist’s great-great-great-great grandmother, Mary Fildes, was President of the Manchester Female Reform Society in the early 19th century.
