What you will learn

Over the course of the day you will explore mark marking with water-colours on wood through moku-mono printing. We will create simple forms and motifs on wood, gradations of colour and shapes through simple resist methods and by inking the block directly with brushes.

Each stage requires careful preparation, in dampening the Japanese washi paper, creating the right consistency of ink to nori paste, brushing the watercolour onto the wood and applying pressure to the print with the hand-held press, known as a Baren. This course is an opportunity to learn how to use printing with water-colour in order to use it in collaboration with other printmaking techniques. It works particularly well in combination with drypoint.

"Lucy was friendly and approachable and very patient at explaining the process. I found it very relaxing and peaceful and really enjoyed the process of Mokuhanga."
