Katsutoshi Yuasa
Katsutoshi Yuasa (b. 1978, Tokyo, Japan) studied at the Royal College of Art, London. He has exhibited his work all over the world including in Tokyo, New York and London and was selected to show work as part of the International Print Biennale 2011 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Selected prizes include the Clifford Chance Purchase Prize and the 6th Gunma Biennale Award. Katsutoshi lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.
Woodcut print, namely the Mokuhanga, is recognised as one of the traditional arts in Japan as well as one of the oldest techniques of printmaking. But my woodcut print is very different from conventional prints, even though I use traditional tools and techniques for producing works. Using photography and digital technology, I spend a lot of time on the hand carving process before printing. My work expresses the signs left by time spent in thought, seemingly running counter to time and era, and I would like to convey the gravity of what is being lost today with a visceral impact similar to pain.
