Hilary Paynter is one of the UK's leading wood engravers and past president of the Royal Society of Painter-Print makers.

This piece forms part of a series of works depicting scenes from North East England entitled 'From the Rivers to the Sea' which was produced to celebrate the 250th anniversary of world renowned wood engraver Thomas Bewick in 2003.  The following year, enlarged images of the pieces were reproduced as vitreous enamel panels and installed in Newcastle Central Metro Station.  When the station was refurbished in 2016 the panels were relocated from station level to the top of the escalators where they can now be viewed by people transferring from the national rail network.

This print depicts St Peter's Church in Monkwearmouth, former home to the Venerable Bede.
