Spring Furnace

We’re delighted to announce that Opening the Furnace has been extended

We’re delighted to announce that Opening the Furnace has been extended, thanks to English Heritage’s Community Connections grants, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

As part of this extension, printmaker Gail Bryson has been specially commissioned to develop a new print and letterpress activity using our recently donated Leggett’s Queen Press.

Inspired by the arrival of spring at Derwentcote Steel Furnace, the project celebrates the site’s changing seasonal landscape.

Join us on Friday 8 May, 6–10pm, in Print Space as part of Late Shows. You’ll have the chance to create your own Spring Furnace print to take home on the night.

Visiting Derwentcote Steel Furnace

Built around 1730, Derwentcote Steel Furnace is one of the earliest surviving examples of a cementation furnace in Britain. It played a vital role in the development of high-quality steel production during the Industrial Revolution. Now managed by English Heritage, the site stands as a beautifully preserved monument to the region’s industrial past.

Location: Derwentcote Steel Furnace Forge Ln, Hamsterley, Rowlands Gill NE17 7RS

Please visit the English Heritage website for directions and access.
