This screenprint is part of a series entitled ‘Mesostic Herbarium Word Garden’. A mesostic poem is when a vertical word is intersected with horizontal text.
Like most of Finlay’s work, this series of prints is concerned with nature and contemporary culture and uses words to create images. Others in the series include ‘Marigold', ‘Walnut’, 'Tormentil' and ‘Mesostic’ with only the colour of the main word changing to reflect the subject of the print.
Edition of 16.
Alec Finlay (Scotland, 1966) is an internationally-recognised artist and poet whose work crosses over a range of media and forms. Much of Finlay's work considers how we as a culture, or cultures, relate to landscape and ecology. Through permanent and temporary interventions, integrative web-based projects, and publications, Finlay weaves together generous experiential works, often collaborative, sometimes mapped directly onto the landscape, embedded socially or accessed online. Recently Finlay's work has focussed on place-awareness and ecopoetics.

Thinking of buying an original print priced at £100 or above*?
We are members of Own Art, a national scheme funded by Arts Council England that makes it easy and affordable for everyone to buy contemporary art.
Own Art allows you to spread the cost of a purchase of an original artwork over 10 months with an interest free loan. With so many works of art to choose from, you could start a collection of your own today from as little as £10 per month.
To help explain the scheme, here are our answers to some frequently asked questions:
What can I buy?
Own Art loans are available in our gallery for the purchase of contemporary art and craft by living artists. That means you can choose more or less anything you want from paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture, to glassware, ceramics, jewellery and textiles.
How much can I borrow?
Own Art loans allow you to borrow from as little as £100 up to a maximum of £2,500 for the purchase of works of art by living artists.
How do I apply?
After you've found something in our gallery or online that you love, speak with a member of staff who can talk you through your options on 0191 2617000. You are able to pay a deposit with Own Art to lower your monthly costs although this is not necessary and the loan can cover framing if you wish. The best option is to visit the gallery if you would like to proceed with an Own Art application where a member of our team will take you through the loan application process. You will need to bring proof of ID, address and signature - a driving licence is ideal or a utility bill and credit or debit card. The application process usually takes 10-15 mins following which you'll get an instant decision so you can take the work home on the same day.
