Etching is one of cornerstones of printmaking and offers endlessly fascinating possibilities for any artist. An image is etched into a metal plate using acid. Zinc, copper or steel can be used but this course focuses on copper. These etched areas sit below the surface of the metal plate and hold the ink ready for printing using an etching press.

This course is suitable for complete beginners or those wishing to refresh their knowledge.

Course content

This 1-day course is a great introduction for those wanting to learn the art of etching or to refresh skills. Working directly onto metal plates you will be taught how to apply hard and soft grounds to create different kinds of etched marks. You will also learn to print these onto high quality printmaking papers with rich oil-based inks using our printing press.

An experimental approach is encouraged through using a range of tools to produce diverse methods of mark making and is ideal for those who enjoy drawing.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to take out a studio membership if you wish and following a simple induction will be able to access the studio facilities to continue with your work.
