Nicole Polonsky: Lighting Up Time

Nicole Polonsky Lighting Up Time Friday 17 May 2019
7 - 11pm

8.30 - 9.30pm BSL interpreter available for Deaf visitors to discuss the project with the artist and gallery team.

Especially for The Late Shows, artist Nicole Polonsky presents Lighting Up Time, a dynamic piece in two parts inspired by the silent film era and the role of its Deaf actors.

An interactive installation of banners and audio refrains takes up residence at Northern Print for one night only.  Lines of text, or 'intertitles',  found in silent films have been screenprinted by the artist on reflective banners which light up when viewers direct torches at them. Each of the texts is teamed with a unique sound composition by Andrew Lovett that can be listened to on phones and tablets. The juxtaposition of visuals and audio recalls early cinema and the live scores that often went hand in hand.

Stream or download Andrew Lovett’s nine sound compositions here. Each one corresponds to a text banner by Nicole Polonsky. Click the back button to return to this page after playing.
