Printmaking Bursaries – Emerging Artists

Northern Print is offering bursaries for three young artists, with opportunities to explore, challenge and share ideas about print with other early-stage professionals and the Northern Print team.

Each recipient will be provided with access to Northern Printʼs studio facilities in Ouseburn Valley, Newcastle upon Tyne, and the materials and tailored technical support needed for them to develop skills and explore print as the focus of their work.

The support includes:

• Intensive induction week with time to connect with the other bursary artists.

• Free access to Northern Printʼs professional printmaking facilities up to 35 days including technical support from our studio staff.

• Materials budget (up to £500).

• Opportunity to exhibit work produced in Northern Printʼs gallery or present online.

• A small budget to support access needs or travel expenses.

The bursaries are designed to be as flexible as possible with scope for each artist to plan their own programme of work, goals, and timetable. For example, artists can choose to work intensively for a shorter period of time or spread their time in the studio over a number of months. There are facilities for traditional printmaking as well as some digital processes.

The funding secured is to support artists under the age of 30 and bursaries must be completed by 31 March 2027. For more information about the studioʼs facilities visit northernprint.org.uk.

Who can apply?

The project is aimed at young artists up to 30 years who completed their formal degree or postgraduate arts education (most likely in Fine Art) at least 12 months before application. We are looking for a strong commitment to continued practice post-graduation, with a quality body of work and ideas for exploration within print. Artists will need at least basic printmaking skills and must indicate how the project will enable them to develop printmaking as a key element of their work. How to apply

We will be looking for applications illustrating an interest and some experience in printmaking, with a clear written statement demonstrating commitment to developing their work with a strong print focus. A selection panel will review all applications. The panel will include a representative of Northern Printʼs staff team, a trustee and an external artist.

• CV, statement and up to 10 images of your work– showing your interest and commitment to printmaking to date.

• A brief proposal about how you would like to use the bursary to develop your practice.

• Donʼt worry if you donʼt know exactly what you would like to produce, it is okay to say that you would like to experiment, but we do want to see that you have an idea or approach to getting the most out of this opportunity.

• An indication of when / how you would use the bursary such as a short intensive period after another residency you are doing is completed etc.

• The name and contact details (email and phone number) of two referees.
