Katsutoshi Yuasa: Trace of Time in Thought
14 March - 28 April
Tokyo based artist Katsutoshi Yuasa creates haunting, evocative woodcut prints that begin their life as digital photographs. Speaking about his work, Yuasa says:
'Woodcut print, namely the Mokuhanga, is recognized as one of the traditional arts in Japan as well as being known as the oldest technique of printmaking. My woodcut print is very different from conventional prints even though I use traditional tools and technique for producing works. Using photography and digital technology, I spent a lot of time on the hand carving process before printing. My work expresses the signs left by time spent in thought, seemingly running counter to time and era, and I would like to convey the gravity of what is being lost today with a visceral impact similar to pain.'
