Rebecca Eelbeck: Borders and Boundaries

This body of work loosely explores the landscape of the Solway Coastline of Cumbria and the south-westerly region of the Scottish Borders. Rebecca’s practice is process led, allowing different printmaking techniques to inform the final images.

For her first experience of relief printing using woodcut, Rebecca has used a playful approach to her image making by highlighting prominent shapes and patterns in the sand on the Solway Coast, tracing the natural lines made by the water in the landscape. Working in woodcut provided restrictions and control that her silkscreen monotypes otherwise lacked, allowing fluid gestures and spontaneous colour blends to form the images of the final screen prints. The screen prints are based on a tourist map of the Scottish Borders- the lines depicting the territorial borders surrounding the village of Newcastleton.

Rebecca Eelbeck lives in Newcastle upon Tyne and was born in Cumbria. She completed a degree in Fine Art at Northumbria University and recently completed a two-year residency as the Graduate Fellow in Printmaking at Northumbria University. Rebecca has exhibited her work widely across the North East of England.

Rebecca is  one of three recipients of a Northern Print Making It bursary for emerging UK artists funded by Idlewild Trust as part of the Nurturing Young Professionals fund.
