Summer Open Studios

This special Summer Open Studios in Ouseburn is part of the Inspired by Great Exhibition of the North programme. Come along to Newcastle’s Cultural Quarter and see behind-the-scenes in Ouseburn’s artists’ studios.
At Northern Print you can watch artists at work in the printmaking studio. On Saturday 10am to 5pm we have Louise Pallister working on solar plate etchings and on Sunday 11am to 2pm we have Pui Lee working on relief prints. You can also find out more about using the printmaking studio and joining our classes programme.
Louise Pallister - Saturday 30 June - 10am-5pm
'I make work in various media concerning the plight of endangered and captive animals. I'm currently making a series of photopolymer etchings based on the pacing behaviour of zoo animals, in this case a caged tiger. Photopolymer is a good medium for developing drawings into printmaking and I plan to format five plates into a continuous image in a concertina book format that can stand in the round.'
Pui Lee - Sunday 1 July - 11am-2pm
'I see printmaking as an extension of my drawing practice. My current work consists mainly of woodcut prints. The process allows me to work directly with materials and the finished blocks have a strong sculptural quality to them. I definitely enjoy the physicality of hand-carving into the Japanese plywood to create striking print images for others to enjoy. Printmaking using woodblock has oriental cultural connections attached to it and this has significance to me because I believe it is important to remember where you have come from and how this makes you who you are today'.

Ouseburn is a lively, creative place to visit. A short distance from Newcastle’s city centre an on the Great Exhibition of the North Design Route. There are also lots of independent bars and cafes to enjoy too!
