Etching: One Evening Online Course
Etching is one of cornerstones of printmaking and offers endlessly fascinating possibilities for any artist. An image is etched into a metal plate using acid. These etched areas sit below the surface of the metal plate and hold onto the ink after the plate is wiped ready for printing using an etching press.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners to intermediate level.
This course is especially for anyone who has always wanted to try etching but never had the chance. The course will be run in one evening online. You will receive a pack containing a small etching plate coated with a ground and an etching needle. During the session we will give you an overview of etching and show you how to scratch your drawing into the plate. You can then drop your plate off at Northern Print or post it to us. We will etch, print and post both your print and the plate back to you so you can display and admire your finished piece.
As our online sessions are live you can ask questions, share your progress and enjoy the company of other participants as they learn and experiment along with you at the same time.
The materials are included in the cost of this course and include:

Thinking of buying an original print priced at £100 or above*?
We are members of Own Art, a national scheme funded by Arts Council England that makes it easy and affordable for everyone to buy contemporary art.
Own Art allows you to spread the cost of a purchase of an original artwork over 10 months with an interest free loan. With so many works of art to choose from, you could start a collection of your own today from as little as £10 per month.
To help explain the scheme, here are our answers to some frequently asked questions:
What can I buy?
Own Art loans are available in our gallery for the purchase of contemporary art and craft by living artists. That means you can choose more or less anything you want from paintings, prints, drawings and sculpture, to glassware, ceramics, jewellery and textiles.
How much can I borrow?
Own Art loans allow you to borrow from as little as £100 up to a maximum of £2,500 for the purchase of works of art by living artists.
How do I apply?
After you've found something in our gallery or online that you love, speak with a member of staff who can talk you through your options on 0191 2617000. You are able to pay a deposit with Own Art to lower your monthly costs although this is not necessary and the loan can cover framing if you wish. The best option is to visit the gallery if you would like to proceed with an Own Art application where a member of our team will take you through the loan application process. You will need to bring proof of ID, address and signature - a driving licence is ideal or a utility bill and credit or debit card. The application process usually takes 10-15 mins following which you'll get an instant decision so you can take the work home on the same day.
For more information visit the Own Art website.
